Scratch & Peck - Oyster Shell

Use Scratch and Peck’s all-natural calcium supplement to increase eggshell strength. Calcium is included in all our layer feeds; however, different breeds require varying amounts. If a hen becomes calcium deficient, her body will draw calcium from her own skeletal system, leading to diminished health. Offer Oyster Shell free choice in a dish or toss on the ground to encourage natural scratch and peck behavior. Birds will self-regulate and take what they need. Begin offering Oyster Shell to hens as they near egg production, approximately at 18 weeks. Offer free choice Layer Grit to support digestion. Always provide ample clean, fresh water. A hen who is deficient in calcium may experience weakness, lethargy, feather plucking, skeletal issues like bone fractures, and decreased or halted egg production.

A strong eggshell is the first line of defense in deflecting bad bacteria from the egg white and yolk. Hens with insufficient calcium levels often produce soft or brittle eggshells. Bacteria can fit through the larger pores of a soft, weak shell. A brittle shell is thin, unsaleable, and difficult to safely store.

• Consistent Egg Production – Hens without consistent access to a nutritionally complete layer feed and a calcium supplement such as Oyster Shell or Limestone may lay fewer eggs or stop laying eggs. Hens in a mixed flock (with younger birds or with males) that are fed a nutritionally complete grower feed will need to consume more of a calcium supplement to make up for the lower amount of calcium in grower feed.
